I HEADED UPSTAIRS TO find out who had come to the precinct to see me, but it felt like an entire circus was trailing behind me.

“Okay,” I said. “All you goons cannot walk in, flanking my sides.”

Melinda sighed. “Call me after, Rosetti.”

Asha sighed too. “I’ll slip back to my desk and definitely not be eavesdropping.”

I looked at Mo and Curly. Finally, Jack and Jimmy took a turn to head to the bullpen from the rear door while I headed toward the conference room.

Dunkirk stood outside the door, waiting for me. “I took her up here, got her settled. Let me know if you need anything.”

I let myself into the conference room, half expecting to find Jane waiting for me with news. Twins? Gender reveal? I took a deep breath and glanced at the woman sitting across the table from me.

At first glance, I didn’t recognize her. She looked vaguely familiar, like I should know who she was, but for the life of me I couldn’t link a face to a name.

“Jessica,” the woman said, watching me back as I searched her face.

“Of course,” I said, then filled in, “Jessica Trimbo.”

“You know who I am.” Jessica didn’t seem surprised.

Which, really, she shouldn’t be, seeing as I was the homicide cop attached to her ex’s case.

“I’ve been looking for you.” I sat across from Jessica and placed a notebook on the table. “I think it’s safe to say I’m not the only one who’s been trying to contact you either.”

“Someone’s always looking for me.” Jessica studied her hands.

At first impression, she looked like a woman who needed help. Her eyes were red and free of makeup, as if she’d been crying too much to bother to wear any. Jessica had tossed her hair up in a messy bun that was legitimately messy, and not carefully sculpted to appear that way. She wore blue jeans and a white baby tee and looked younger than I expected, considering Phil had been in his early forties.

The reason she’d looked so familiar to me was because I’d seen her face on the computer screen and the reports that Asha had sent my way. It had thrown me off, trying to match the photos Asha had pulled from social media in which Jessica had been smiling with a full face of makeup to the bare-faced woman now sitting before me.

“What brings you in today?” I ventured.

“It’s my daughter.”

“Kimberly?” As I said the name, Jessica burst into tears, which startled me. “What’s going on with Kimberly?”

“She’s been kidnapped.” Jessica sniffed deeply and wiped at her eyes. “She’s really gone.”

I raised my hands and gestured for her to slow down. “Start from the beginning. I know this is going to be difficult for you, but the more details you can remember, the better. The faster we can get through the information, the faster we can start looking for her. Please be as thorough as you can.”

“You mean stop crying and tell you what happened?”

“I understand this is a very emotional time.
